Don't be afraid if you honestly
answer, "Yes." Many people do (many more
than you would think). I do, and I have
a BFA degree in photography!
I know that some experts/teachers say
it's fine if you cannot visualize
things. "Everybody is different," they
say. Some of us are word oriented.
Others are more sensitive to touch, or
feelings, or sound. That's true, and...
Vision is VISUAL. Your
Imagination is based on making IMAGES,
pictures in your mind.
I believe that the ability to
Visualize is a skill anyone can learn
and become very, very good at. You
simply need to Know HOW to Visualize and
then PRACTICE what you've
Learned. You can literally (and
visually:-) learn to Visualize vividly,
easily and instantly in only a few days.
Why is Vision important...?
Because Your Imagination is one
of..., if not THE MOST powerful
Creative Force in Your Life. You and I
ARE precisely Who and How we
Imagine (Vision) ourselves to be.
Do you have a Vision of yourself as a
person who can hit a golf ball 327 yards
straight down the middle? Tiger Woods
does.
Do you have a Vision that you can
make a $36 billion fortune in the stock
market? Warren Buffet does.
Do you have a Vision of yourself
making a profound and positive
difference in the lives of millions and
millions of women (and men) around the
world? Marianne Williamson does.
Want to know what Your Vision is?
Look at Your Life....
Want More and Better (anything) in
Your Life? Change Your Vision....
If you have struggled or experienced
difficulty in creating a Vision in the
past, here's a simple exercise you can
do a couple of times each day to build
Your Vision Muscles. And just like
working out in the gym for the first
time or after a long lay-off, start
slowly with something you can easily do.
(Allow yourself to take baby steps with
this. In a remarkably short time you
will be a Mr. or Ms. Olympia with
bulging Vision Muscles all over:-)
The best attitude to have for this
exercise is one of Playful
Experimentation. Please, Have Fun!
TO BEGIN:
Select an object you can hold in your
hand: a portable phone, palm calculator,
your watch or some other piece of
jewelry, a pen, paper money or a
coin.... Just pick something you can
hold comfortably in your hand and that
looks interesting to you.
Next, locate yourself in a quiet
place and space where you can be
uninterrupted and undisturbed for 10
minutes. Have the room contain enough
light for you to see clearly. If having
a serene piece of music to play in the
background, which would help you relax,
do that. Sit in a way that your spine is
fairly straight. If you're in a chair,
place your feet flat on the floor.
You'll be doing part of this exercise
with your eyes closed so as not to be
distracted by seeing other things around
you. You'll begin with focusing your
attention on Breathing and Relaxing.
Take the object you selected and set
it down near enough to reach it easily
when you are ready.
Close your eyes and begin by
Exhaling. Don't strain, just "encourage"
the air out by pushing gently from the
area just below your navel. Allow your
Inhale to be automatic and easy,
naturally filling your belly and chest
with your breath. Continue to breathe
slowly, deliberately and deeply. As you
do this, relax any part of your body
where there is tension. Simply focus on
that area of your body and literally
"tell" it to relax. Do not worry about
thoughts or feelings you may have. Just
let them be and Breathe and Relax.
When you are relaxed, calm and ready,
open your eyes and pick up the object in
your hand. Look at it. Study it and
notice as much about it as you can. What
color or colors do you see? Describe
it's size and shape? What are the unique
and interesting details it has? How do
you use it? Consider its value to you.
Is it important? Expensive? Personal or
Precious in any way? And notice how you
"Feel" about it: Does the object make
you feel Good? Bad? In what way...?
When you're Complete noticing and
seeing all you can for the moment about
the object, keeping the object in your
hand, close your eyes. Do a couple of
cycles of breathing in and out,
returning yourself to a relaxed and calm
state.
Now, bring the Image or Picture of
the object in your hand to your mind.
Physically extend your hand to hold the
object in front of you just as you did
when your eyes were open, AND Keep your
Eyes Closed. Recall the object. Use Your
Imagination to SEE it's size and shape,
colors, the interesting parts of its
design and detail. Feel it's weight. As
you look at it, recall the Value it has
for you, how you use it and any other
things you Think and Feel about it.
When you are Complete for now, let
the image of the object you created in
your mind go away, feel yourself present
in the room and when you're ready, open
your eyes.
So, how'd you do? Were you able to
see a picture of the object? Was the
image clear or cloudy? Could you imagine
the object in living color and great
detail, or did you struggle to bring up
a picture in your mind?
If this was difficult for you or if
you wrestled with the process don't
worry. At any point during this exercise
if you experience struggle STOP. SMILE.
ACKNOWLEDGE yourself for what you did
right, well and successfully. Even if
all you did was to breathe and relax and
look at the object with your eyes open,
make that your WIN! (That way, you'll be
able to build upon it for the future.)
Whether you find it Easy or Hard to
Visualize, understand that these are
Both Only Habits-- the very same Thought
you have had again and again and over
again simply became a Belief. If you
BELIEVE Visualizing is Hard for You,
doing this exercise will change that.
You will simply be establishing a New
Belief that will quickly become more
dominant than the old one.
Do this Vision Exercise a couple of
times each day. Use different objects.
When you can clearly Imagine the objects
you're choosing consistently, "back up"
your Vision enlarging it to include your
hand, arm and some of the surrounding
area.
Next, expand your Vision to include
the room itself. Then picture yourself
sitting in the room from a perspective a
couple of feet behind and above you. See
yourself sitting there holding the
object in your hand, notice the room,
the furniture, the shapes and sizes,
walls, doors and windows, picture the
scene with you in it as fully as you
can.
As you do any and all of these
exercises, begin to Imagine how you
FEEL. Picture yourself Happy, Pleased
and Proud at your growing ability to
Visualize. Acknowledge yourself for how
easy it is to use your Imagination, and
how being able to Choose how You Think
and Feel Empowers You.
Can you sense the Creative Power you
have begun to Master for Creating the
way You Want to Be, Do and Have Your
Life turn out...?
